Winged Elm

Type of Plant:     Medium sized deciduous (loses its leaves annually i.e. winter) tree.
Description:     It is sometimes called “cork elm” due to its cork-like “wings” growing on the branches. These thin wings can grow up to be a ½ inch thick. The winged branches arch upward and give the tree much visual character. Typically, elms grow to be 40-50 feet and from 1-2 feet in diameter.

Climate Requirements:     Winged elm is a widely used street and shade tree as it loves sun and it is very adaptable to a variety of soil conditions. Its growth rate is slow, but can grow rapidly in moist soil conditions.
Care Requirements:     Recommend fertilizer 2x a year.
Special Needs:     None
Special Uses/Attributes:     If you are looking for a shade tree with a bit of whimsy that also blocks the heat in the summer and gives you an  unblocked view in the winter as it sheds its oblong leaves, then this just may be the perfect tree for you!

Type of Plant:     Tree
Description:     Medium sized evergreen tree w/ a conic crown and has dark green foliage that grows in very dense sprays.

Fruit:  Oblong seed cones
Climate Requirements:     Heat tolerant, cold tolerant, and drought tolerant once established. Adaptable to most climates.
Care Requirements:     Susceptible to spider mites and cypress canker of which can be treated with insecticide.
Special Needs:     None
Special Uses/Attributes: Primarily and heavily used as an ornamental tree.

FYI:     It is very long lived, some trees have lived to over 1000 years old.
